The World
Once you have created your universe, it's necessary to define the basis of your world. Several components must be determined and the goal of this page is to allow you to create the general architecture of your world.
The Scale
The first question you must ask yourself is range of your Roleplaying Game. In Space-Opera, the answer is : the cosmos. For the other kinds of Roleplaying Game, the answer may be different :
1) Planetary Range : you must define the planet where the Characters will evolve. It's no use defining it precisely if you create a disposable RPG : creating a planet is a colossal task. I've been creating Aventures Arcanes since 17 years and I've not finished.
2) Continental Range : you just have to define one continent where the adventures take place. This is an acceptable range for a RPG including wars between various countries.
3) Contry Scale : ypu ust have to define the country where the Players will play. For most RPG, this is the easiest way to have an interesting background.
4) Régional Scale : you just need a region. Very good solution for "Intrigue of the Court" scenarios.
5) Local Scale or City : Although Players have to move, tjey always come back in the same place or city. Many scenarios take place in the city. You just have to define precisely the city. Very good to begin.
We can talk about stellar or galactic Range too. These intermediate ranges are useful for Science-Fiction and Space-Opera (did you notice that in Starwars, there are only few planets in the universe?)
Don't try to create everything in a single time. It's impossible or your players will test your RPG in few decades!!! Start slowly and every time your Players ask something about backgrounds, history and NPCs, write it!
The Geography
Think about the geography of your world. We won't comment it a lot, but geography can be a strategic or a commercial factor ...
The Ecology
For the Roleplaying Games which doesn't take place on Earth, you'll have to define the ecosystem , the faun and the flora which may be very different from Earth. Here are some "tips" for a "coherent" ecology :
1) Frozen zones don't have a great flora. Animals and creatures are protected from cold by thick scales or fur. Warm blood creatures are often small in this environment to avoïd heat loss.
2) Tropical zones possess a various and abundant biodiversity. Because of predators, many creatures are toxic.
3) Desert Zones are inhabited by reptile-like creatures and animals. Warm blood creatures develop strategy to struggle against the great divergence of temperature between night and day.
4) Temperate Zones possess also a great biodiversity. In those zones, you can let your imagination explodes.
5) Oceanic zones are inhabited with creatures adapted to underwater life. Amphibious creatures develop strategy to spare oxygen and limit their heat deprivation linked to submarine life.
The Meteorology
Even if this data is secundary, it can influence the atmosphere of scenarios, especially if meteorology is atypical. Winds, rains, blizzards, tornadoes and storms are very interesting into a scenario.
The Different Societies
Mostly in RPG including other races, it's obvious that societies maybe very different from human societies we know! Don't hesitate to include surprising or shocking elements for your Players.
We will complete this page in a next version of the site!.
